Franz Josef is a vibrant little town! Fortunately situated under the mountains in a Rain band, (historically, the village was positioned here as it is the best, narrowest point to cross the Glacier river, and gold was also found on the river terrace behind it).

Franz Josef boosts a wonderful array of services and accommodation tailor-made for travellers to reside whilst passing though the region.

The glacier region is approximately 5-6 hours from Christchurch, Nelson, and Queenstown. Hokitika to the north, 1.5 hours and Wanaka to the south 3.5 hours, are the closest service centres.
