We are lucky here at Glacier Country Kayaks & Glacier Country Lake Tours to still be open and able to operate after last week’s weather event.  Now the weather is clear and the rivers have dropped, and we’re blessed with fine weather!  Here’s a picture snapped from the lake on this mornings Kayak & Walk tour:

Last week, we received a huge amount of rain over a couple of days (more than London receives in a year to be exact!).  This resulted in rapidly rising rivers and the collapse of the Waiho Bridge which connects SH6 South to Fox Glacier.  However, the West Coast is known for it’s resilience and we expect to have a new bridge open within 2 weeks!

Lake Mapourika had risen to the highest levels we’ve ever witnessed.  We lost sight of the Jetty, and it sat for several days underwater.  We also lost most of the lower car park!  This added some excitement to our Kayak Classic Tours as we were paddling above the flax through the Kiwi Sanctuary on the far shore!

Photos below of the kayaks landing in the usual van parking spaces:

Paddling above the flax and the rainforest through the creek:

Our Kayak and Walk track beach and viewing point were under water as well.

Below is a before and after picture of the lake.  On the left is the lookout point from our walking track before the rainfall, and the right is after!

If you’re thinking of booking a tour, it’s really easy to do online HERE.

Remember that the roads are now OPEN from the north!  You can’t currently drive south from Franz Josef but we’re a worthy destination!  The sun is shining for the next few days, so get yourselves onto a Heli-hike or Scenic Flight to the Glacier!  Franz Josef has hotel vacancies, great places to eat and lots of great discounts in town right now!

If you’ve got any questions please get in touch and someone from our friendly reservations team will get back to you.
